The stability of reconstituted amoxicillin-potassium clavulanate oral suspension both in original containers and plastic bottles at various temperature was studied. Amoxicillin 125§·/5§¢ potassium clavulanate 31.25§·/5§¢ and amoxicillin 62.5§·/5§¢ potassium clavulanate 15.625§·/5§¢ were reconstituted according to the manufacturer¢¥s instructions. The reconstituted suspensions in the original containers and in plastic bottles which are being used in 3 hospitals in Seoul were stored at 5¡É and 25¡É, respectively, for 1, 3, 5, 7 and 14days. The concentrations of amoxicillin and potassium clavulanate remaining after storage were assayed in triplicate by reverse-phase HPLC. It appeared that at 5¡É, 125 strength amoxicillin was stable for 7.4days in the original container and 31.25 strength potassium clavulanate was stable for 4.5days. And the effect of the containers on the stability of the suspension was insignificant at various temperatrues. As a result, we can suggest that the reconstituted Augmentin oral suspension should be prescribed for 4 days under the condition that it is kept at 5¡É in order to keep its clinical strength.
